Chris, our Head Roaster, chose these two coffees for this gift box, picking his favorite coffees from the cupping table. This gift box includes a honey processed microlot - Honduras Los Quetzales - and a fully washed coffee from Kenya's Kericho county - Kenya Kabngetuny.
Honduras Los Quetzales: The farm of Pedro Sagastume is named for the proud, iridescent birds that inhabit the forests of the Santa Bárbara region. We love the feeling of beauty that the name "Los Quetzales" evokes while sipping on this stunning, vibrant honey processed coffee. The cup profile has a naturally buoyant sweetness derived from the fruit pectins and mucilage that remain on the coffee seed as it dries (aka the honey process). The Los Quetzales estate itself is nothing short of magical - located at the base of a mountainous national park where the singsong of the tropical birds and the cries of howler monkeys follow you through the dense rows of lush, ripe coffee trees.
Kenya Kabngetuny: Kericho County may not have the same prominence in the coffee world as its not-too-distant cousin to the east, Nyeri County, but in the last decade it has established itself with a standard of excellence. The future of certified coffee from Kenya depends on the successes of the hardworking farmers and processing mills in Kericho. Kabngetuny Farmers Cooperative Society is one cooperative that is working to make this transformation into a reality. They were one of the first cooperatives in the region to work with Fairtrade, and have since focused on partnerships to promote women's ownership of coffee farms and smallscale organic conversion projects.
